Sugar Month/Maple Moon

Join Coggeshall Farm as it celebrates nature’s bounty in the form of maple sugar. There is hardly a more joyous time of year than when the sap runs sweet from the trees. Native people from Canada to Massachusetts have long celebrated the period called, “sugar month” or “maple moon”. Depending on local climate, this period falls somewhere between mid February to mid April. Come and learn how early Anglo Americans regarded and adapted this well established practice of distilling precious sugar from the sap of the maple tree.
They will be demonstrating the sugaring process from tree to sugar using late 18th century tools and techniques. Other period demonstrations will take place in the farm house. Come and learn how to make delicious sugar from the sap of your own trees.
Our sugar comes from the Norway Maple. Norway Maple (Acer platanoides) is a species of maple native to eastern and central Europe and southwest Asia, from France east to Russia, north to southern Scandinavia and southeast to northern Iran. It is favored due to its tolerance of poor, compacted soils and urban pollution. As a result of these characteristics, Norway Maple is displacing locally native hardwoods in some parts of North America and is considered invasive in some states, but is still widely used for urban plantings in many areas. The sugar from the Norway Maple has a fine grain and a dark brown color. The flavor is multifaceted with overtones of molasses and sometimes butter. Some people prefer this sugar to that of the Rock Maple for its Rich flavor and delicate texture.

Christmas at Blithewold Ends

Entering the mansion, guests will encounter the magnificent 18 foot "tree of fantasy" soaring to the ceiling and twinkling with thousands of lights. Decorations on the Christmas tree reflect the various individual fairy tale and fantasy themes used by teh decorators in each of the mansion's rooms.
Alice in Wonderland's "Mad Hatter's Tea Party" is the setting in the dining room, where the blues and whites of the family's Delft collection inspire the decorations for this fanciful tea. The living room is awash with colorful lights, topiaries and nutcrackers of every size and color, in keeping with the "Nutcracker Suite" theme. In the billiard room the dark greens of the forest surround Hansel and Gretel, who have just come upon the tantalizing sweet-treat-covered gingerbread house of the old witch.
The magical holiday display continues up the stairway to the second floor rooms where designers have interpreted children's literature and Christmas fantasies. Santa soars over the Mt. Hope Bridge in a 1910 Piper Cub and arrives at Blithewold for a magical Christmas celebration. Marjorie's room is the setting of Clement Moore's classic poem "The Night Before Christmas," featuring Christmas letters written to and from Blithewold family members. In Augustine's room join Edward Lear's Owl and Pussycat as they set sail on an enchanted Christmas cruise to the Caribbean. Snowflakes and snowmen can be found in the nursery depicting a scene from the 1950s classic "Frosty the Snowman."
The master bedroom is aglow with candlelit trees and firelight in celebration of the tale of "Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates" and Dutch Christmas traditions. Gingerbread inspired fantasy houses and the scents and sounds of the holiday greet visitors to the Carriage House, where a Gingerbread Family bakes cookies in their own image.
Afternoon Tea will be served in the dining room every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 2 & 3 pm. Tickets will be an additional $10 with admission to the mansion on a first-come basis. Guests are able to sit, relax and enjoy the lovely decorations. As part of our holiday tradition, musical performers will help to celebrate the season with Live Musical Performances taking place each week, Thursday through Saturday, at 6:30 PM. "Children's Story Time" will return on Wednesdays at 4 PM. Blithewold's Holiday Gift Shop is open in the Breakfast Porch of the mansion, offering many exciting gifts, books, and decorations, many of which you will see used to decorate the rooms.

Christmas at Blithewold Begins

Bristol 4th of July Fireworks

Fireworks are shot over Bristol Harbor. Pick a spot anywhere near the harbor's edge. Our favorite is the stillness of the cove adjacent to the harbor where you can see brilliant reflections of the displays in the water.
